The 1200 Foundation is a non-profit grant-making organization
committed to programs which help low-income individuals
and families in Alameda and Contra Costa counties achieve
economic self-sufficiency.
We award grants to innovative, successful programs in
the following areas:
- Job skills training
- Career development support.
- Entrepreneurship and small business creation
- Family support services focused on building economically
independent families
We are able to do this by raising funds from a broad
base of individual, foundation and corporate donors.
Awarding Grants. Our grant
committee identifies candidate grant recipients and
determines if each candidate program supports the
foundation’s core goals of effectively
serving the working poor. Next, the committee determines
if the funding will make a significant difference to
the program and will offer the best possible return
on the foundation’s investment.
Grant recipients are required to submit periodic reports.
These reports, and our interaction with the recipients,
make it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of the
funded programs.
Raising Funds. The original
premise behind the 1200 Foundation was to have each
donor give $100 a month for a yearly total of $1200 – all
tax deductible. We appreciate monthly donations in
amounts greater than $100, and we also welcome one-time
donations in any amount.
East Bay Focus
Based in Northern California, the 1200 Foundation
is focusing its efforts in the Alameda and Contra Costa
counties of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Area. Since
our founding in 2006, we have awarded over $100,000
to non-profit organizations assisting people in the
East Bay.
We work closely with other organizations to help identify
these worthy non-profits. One of these partners is
the East
Bay Community Foundation (EBCF), an Oakland-based
organization that has been serving our community since
1928. We have looked to them for their intimate knowledge
of the programs serving the East Bay working poor and
their experience in grant-making. Additional partners
include foundations in San Francisco and others in
the East Bay as well as our grantee organizations themselves
and non-profits they work with.
Although we don’t accept
grant applications, the 1200 Foundation is always
looking for non-profit programs that advance the
lives of the working poor. We use East Bay volunteers
rather than paid staff for all ongoing organizational
activities. All donations are used for grantmaking
and only board member donations are used for overhead.
